US President Joe Biden has said he would use force to defend Taiwan if it was attacked by China, appearing to signal a shift away from Washington\u2019s decades-long policy of so-called strategic ambiguity towards the East Asian democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Biden made the remarks on Monday while visiting Japan, where he is on the second leg of his first trip to East Asia since taking office last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding to a reporter\u2019s questions about Taiwan at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Biden said defending Taiwan was a \u201ccommitment we made\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said while the US agrees with the \u201cone China policy\u201d \u2013 which states there is a single China but does not define it \u2013 the idea that \u201cTaiwan can be taken by force\u201d is \u201cnot appropriate\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither, he said, is \u201canother action similar to what happened in Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it welcomed Biden\u2019s comments for \u201creaffirming\u201d Washington\u2019s \u201cfirm commitment to Taiwan\u201d and would deepen cooperation with countries including the US and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe challenges China poses to the security of the Taiwan Strait have aroused great concern to the international community,\u201d a spokesperson said. \u201cOur government\u2019s firm determination to defend Taiwan\u2019s freedom, democracy and security has never changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The comments mark the third time that Biden, 79, has made such a statement only for it to be quickly walked back by White House staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shortly after Biden\u2019s remarks on Monday, an unnamed White House official told reporters there is \u201cno change in US policy towards Taiwan\u201d, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matthew Kroenig, deputy director of the Atlantic Council\u2019s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, said that while it is debatable whether or not Biden misspoke, the president\u2019s remarks clarify his thinking on Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
