North Korea promoted its key nuclear negotiator to foreign minister, state media said on Saturday, as leader Kim Jong Un vowed to his ruling party that he would use \u201cpower for power\u201d to fight threats to the country\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He announced goals to boost the country\u2019s military power and defence research to protect North Korea\u2019s sovereign rights, KCNA said in a report of a Plenary Meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers\u2019 Party of Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Korean Defence Minister Lee Jong-sup and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday condemned the North\u2019s ongoing military activities and preparations for a nuclear test as unacceptable provocations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meeting on the sidelines of a security conference in Singapore, Lee and Austin, \u201cagreed to expand the scope and scale of South Korea-U.S. combined exercises as agreed at the two countries\u2019 summit in order to maintain steadfast deterrence and constant readiness,\u201d South Korea\u2019s Defence Ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSecretary Austin underscored that the U.S. commitment to the defence of (South Korea) is ironclad and underpinned by the full range of U.S. capabilities, including nuclear,\u201d the U.S. Defense Department said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
