{"id":26217,"date":"2022-08-04T10:45:55","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T10:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=26217"},"modified":"2022-08-04T10:45:57","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T10:45:57","slug":"australia-to-protect-barrier-reef-by-banning-coal-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=26217","title":{"rendered":"Australia to protect Barrier Reef by banning coal mine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ABC News:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CANBERRA, Australia &#8212; Australia\u2019s new government announced on Thursday it plans to prevent development of a coal mine due to the potential impact on the nearby Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said she intends to deny approval for the Central Queensland Coal Project to be excavated northwest of the Queensland state town of Rockhampton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minority Greens <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/GreenParty\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">party<\/a> has been pressing the center-left Labor Party government, which was elected in May, to refuse approvals of coal or gas projects, to help reduce <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/Australia\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australia<\/a>\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBased on the information available to me at this stage, I believe that the project would be likely to have unacceptable impacts to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and the values of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and National Heritage Place,\u201d Plibersek said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The marine park manages the network of more than 2,500 reefs that cover 348,000 square kilometers (134,000 square miles) of seabed off the northeast Australian coast. The World Heritage Area, designated by the United Nations and Australia&#8217;s National Heritage List, includes natural, historic and Indigenous places of outstanding significance to the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNESCO, the U.N. cultural organization, is considering downgrading the Great Barrier Reef\u2019s World Heritage status mainly because rising ocean temperatures are killing coral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mine\u2019s proponents have 10 business days to respond to the proposed refusal before the minister makes her final decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greens welcomed the news and urged the minister to reject another 26 planned coal mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow we need an across-the-board moratorium on all new coal and gas projects,\u201d Greens leader Adam Bandt said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed decision was announced after the House of Representatives passed a bill that would enshrine in law the government\u2019s ambition to reduce Australia\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions by 43% below 2005 levels by the end of the decade.
