Britain\u2019s new prime minister, Rishi Sunak, says he will fly to Egypt after all to join UN climate talks after provoking a tempest two days into his tenure when he refused to attend the global conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sunak had argued that \u201cpressing domestic commitments\u201d would keep him away from COP27 talks in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after he inherited an economic crisis from predecessor Liz Truss<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But that fuelled doubts about Sunak\u2019s interest in the planetary emergency, and critics said the inexperienced leader was passing up an opportunity to rub shoulders with the likes of US President Joe Biden and his European peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change,\u201d Sunak wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. \u201cThere is no energy security without investing in renewables.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said he would attend the summit to \u201cdeliver on Glasgow\u2019s legacy<\/a> of building a secure and sustainable future\u201d \u2013 a reference to an agreement reached at last year\u2019s COP26 event, which Britain hosted. The deal was meant to keep alive the world\u2019s chances of averting the worst impacts of global warming<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Truss\u2019s predecessor Boris Johnson had made fighting climate change and working towards \u201cnet zero\u201d emissions a signature policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
