India\u2019s balancing act on the war in Ukraine is becoming more difficult, but New Delhi\u2019s unique position \u2013 as a friend of both Russia and the West \u2013 could see it emerge as a key mediator, experts have told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When war began on February 24, New Delhi was quick to support Ukraine\u2019s humanitarian needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But India has abstained from condemning Moscow\u2019s actions at the United Nations \u2013 a consistent position that the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi says is in line with India\u2019s foreign and defence policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a November interview with Times Now, an Indian media outlet, India\u2019s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar argued that he is not trying to cater to the demands of \u201cother people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSometimes, I have lived with things that you [the West] did. Now, live with it [India\u2019s foreign policy],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
