{"id":28874,"date":"2022-12-01T09:49:41","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T09:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=28874"},"modified":"2022-12-01T09:49:46","modified_gmt":"2022-12-01T09:49:46","slug":"australian-jailed-in-myanmar-applauded-in-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=28874","title":{"rendered":"Australian jailed in Myanmar applauded in Parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ABC News:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CANBERRA, Australia &#8212; Sean Turnell, an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/Australia\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a>n economist who spent almost two years imprisoned in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/Myanmar\" target=\"_blank\">Myanmar<\/a>, received a hero\u2019s welcome Thursday at Australia\u2019s Parliament House where lawmakers rose in a standing ovation and the prime minister praised his courage, optimism and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turnell, an adviser to Myanmar\u2019s elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, was among American, Japanese and British citizens released Nov. 17 as part of a broader prisoner amnesty during Myanmar\u2019s National Victory Day celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Days after Myanmar\u2019s military seized control of the Southeast Asian country in February 2021, Turnell was arrested while preparing the leave the country. He was sentenced in September to three years in prison on charges of violating the country\u2019s official secrets law and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/Immigration\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immigration<\/a> law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 58-year-old Sydney resident and his wife Ha Vu sat in the House of Representatives on Thursday on Parliament\u2019s final sitting day of the year as lawmakers stood to applaud the couple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are so glad as you\u2019ve seen from the response across the chamber here to have you back,\u201d Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the couple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albanese said the military had \u201ctrashed human rights\u201d in Myanmar, where Turnell has worked intermittently over 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albanese thanked the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and Japan for helping Australia\u2019s diplomatic efforts to secure Turnell\u2019s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat he endured in his 650 days of incarceration is something that no human being should have to endure and yet he has done it with grace and even in inhumane conditions with profound humanity,\u201d Albanese told Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking directly to Turnell, Albanese added, \u201cOur relief and joy at your release is also tinged with no small amount of awe, awe and respect at your courage, your optimism and your resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turnell did not speak to Parliament.
