{"id":30150,"date":"2023-02-06T10:43:20","date_gmt":"2023-02-06T10:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=30150"},"modified":"2023-02-06T10:43:23","modified_gmt":"2023-02-06T10:43:23","slug":"huge-quake-toppled-buildings-in-turkey-and-syria-as-people-slept","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=30150","title":{"rendered":"Huge quake toppled buildings in Turkey and Syria as people slept"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BBC News:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A powerful earthquake has struck in south-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, killing more than 1,000 people as they slept and trapping many others.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkey&#8217;s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the death toll there was now 912.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Syria, more than 460 people died, with victims in both government-controlled and rebel-held areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Syrian health ministry said 320 people had died in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White Helmets rescue group, which operates in rebel-controlled areas of north-western Syria, said on Twitter that at least 147 people had died there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are fears the number of deaths will rise sharply in the coming hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many buildings have collapsed and rescue teams have been deployed to search for survivors under huge piles of rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/64533954\">LIVE &#8211; latest updates on earthquake<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The epicentre of the quake was in the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province. Turkish Interior Minister Suleymon Soylu said 10 cities were affected: Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Gaziantep, at least 80 people were killed, officials said, while 70 died in Kahramanmaras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Malatya province, north-east of Gaziantep, at least 47 people were killed. In Sanliurfa, to the east, there were 18 deaths. Other deaths were reported in various places including Diyarbakir and Osmaniye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 2,323 people were injured in Turkey and 1,000 in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A BBC Turkish correspondent in Diyarbakir reported that a shopping mall in the city collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/emp.bbc.com\/emp\/SMPj\/2.47.2\/iframe.htmlMedia caption,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch: Searching for people in earthquake rubble in Malatya<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tremor was also felt in Lebanon and Cyprus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was writing something and just all of a sudden the entire building started shaking and yes I didn&#8217;t really know what to feel,&#8221; Mohamad El Chamaa, a student in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, told the BBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was right next to the window so I was just scared that they might shatter. It went on for four-five minutes and it was pretty horrific. It was mind-blowing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rushdi Abualouf, a BBC producer in the Gaza Strip, said there was about 45 seconds of shaking in the house he was staying in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/cpsprodpb\/16D0D\/production\/_128535439_turkey_earthquake_locator_640x2-nc.png\" alt=\"Map of quake zone\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkish seismologists estimated the strength of the quake to be 7.4 magnitude.
