{"id":30356,"date":"2023-02-14T10:41:48","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T10:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=30356"},"modified":"2023-02-14T10:43:21","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T10:43:21","slug":"ukraine-seeks-warplanes-at-nato-talks-allies-fret-over-ammo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=30356","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine seeks warplanes at NATO talks, allies fret over ammo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ABC News:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BRUSSELS &#8212; Ukraine maintained its appeal for Western countries to provide it with fighter jets Tuesday, but the United States and its NATO allies and partners voiced more concern about Kyiv&#8217;s needs for large amounts of ammunition as the war with Russia approached its one-year anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of the meeting of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/Ukraine\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> contact group at NATO headquarters, Ukraine made its requirements clear. Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, when asked what military aid his country is seeking now, showed reporters an image of a fighter jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questioned about where he hoped they might come from, Reznikov said only: \u201cFrom the sky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What NATO allies have on their mind, though, is how to keep up a steady supply of ammunition to Ukraine without depleting their own stockpiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to some estimates, Ukraine is firing up to 6,000-7,000 artillery shells each day, around a third of the daily amount that Russia is using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moscow&#8217;s forces have been pressing in the east of Ukraine while bolstering their defensive lines in the south. The war has been largely static during the winter months, though both sides are expected to launch offensives when the weather improves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that finding ammunition and air defenses is \u201cmuch more important at the moment than the discussion about fighter jets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pistorius told reporters that getting pilots up to speed on new aircraft and \u201ctraining just to fly them takes several months, never mind teaching the abilities needed to deploy the weapons systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said Ukraine\u2019s partners \u201cshould focus on what is now at center stage, particularly in view of a Russian offensive that is apparently taking place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday urged Ukraine\u2019s Western allies to step up their military support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked when he expects Russia\u2019s so-called spring offensive to begin, Stoltenberg said that \u201cthe reality is that we have seen the start already.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor me, this just highlights the importance of timing. It\u2019s urgent to provide Ukraine with more weapons,\u201d he told reporters in Brussels.
