{"id":31371,"date":"2023-04-10T05:57:28","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T05:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=31371"},"modified":"2023-04-10T05:57:32","modified_gmt":"2023-04-10T05:57:32","slug":"china-military-displays-force-toward-taiwan-after-tsai-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=31371","title":{"rendered":"China military displays force toward Taiwan after Tsai trip"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ABC News:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TAIPEI, Taiwan &#8212; China\u2019s military sent several dozen warplanes and 11 warships toward <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/Taiwan\" target=\"_blank\">Taiwan<\/a> in a display of force following its president\u2019s trip to the U.S., the island&#8217;s Defense Ministry said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chinese military earlier had announced three-day \u201ccombat readiness patrols\u201d as a warning to Taiwan, a self-ruled island which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/Taiwan\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China<\/a> claims as its own. The actions follow President Tsai Ing-wen\u2019s delicate diplomatic mission to shore up Taiwan&#8217;s dwindling alliances in Central America and boost U.S. support, a trip capped with a sensitive meeting with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California. A U.S. congressional delegation also met with Tsai over the weekend in Taiwan after she returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China responded to the McCarthy meeting by imposing a travel ban and financial sanctions against those associated with Tsai\u2019s U.S. trip and with increased military activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, a total of 70 planes were detected and half crossed the median of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial boundary once tacitly accepted by both sides, according to Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of National Defense. Among the planes that crossed the median were 8 J-16 fighter jets, 4 J-1 fighters, 8 Su-30 fighters and reconnaissance planes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That followed a full day between Friday and Saturday, where eight warships and 71 planes were detected near Taiwan, according to the island&#8217;s Defense Ministry. The ministry said in a statement it was approaching the situation from the perspective of \u201cnot escalating conflict, and not causing disputes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taiwan said it monitored the Chinese moves through its land-based missile systems, as well as on its own navy vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to combat readiness patrols, China&#8217;s People&#8217;s Liberation Army would hold \u201clive fire training\u201d in Luoyuan Bay in China&#8217;s Fujian province opposite Taiwan, the local Maritime Authority announced over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s military harassment of Taiwan has intensified in recent years with planes or ships sent toward the island on a near-daily basis, with the numbers rising in reaction to sensitive activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taiwan split with China in 1949 after a civil war. China&#8217;s ruling Communist Party says the island is obliged to rejoin the mainland, by force if necessary.
