{"id":31903,"date":"2023-05-10T04:21:12","date_gmt":"2023-05-10T04:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=31903"},"modified":"2023-05-10T04:25:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T04:25:35","slug":"taiwan-conflict-maritime-code-to-figure-in-asean-talks-marcos-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=31903","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan conflict, maritime code to figure in ASEAN talks, Marcos says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reuters:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May 10 &#8211; Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has said the prospect of tensions escalating over Taiwan was a &#8220;grave concern&#8221; to Southeast Asian leaders and discussions about it were inevitable at this week&#8217;s summit in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Considering that we agree on the concept of ASEAN centrality when it comes to regional concerns, that will be one of the most important subjects that we will bring up,&#8221; Marcos told reporters late on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcos was in Indonesia for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/myanmars-crisis-overshadows-asean-summit-indonesia-2023-05-09\/\">Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit<\/a>, where he will seek the completion of a code of conduct for the South China Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I will bring it up again,&#8221; Marcos said. &#8220;The issues &#8230; they will not calm down until we have a code of conduct.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Philippines, which won an arbitration case in 2016 that clarified its sovereign rights and invalidated China&#8217;s claim of historic jurisdiction over the entire South China Sea, has complained of late about Beijing&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/reut.rs\/42saSuh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;dangerous manoeuvres&#8221; and &#8220;aggressive tactics&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China says it is operating lawfully in its territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcos was in the United States last week and met counterpart Joe Biden, after which he secured a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/why-have-united-states-philippines-issued-defence-treaty-guidelines-2023-05-04\/\">clear-cut treaty commitment<\/a> from Washington that it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-issues-guidelines-defending-philippines-south-china-sea-attack-2023-05-04\/\">defend the Philippines<\/a> if attacked in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ASEAN and China have been working towards a maritime code of conduct following a commitment they made in 2001, a set of rules that many analysts expect will, if they materialise, be non-binding and have no enforcement mechanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China&#8217;s claims run more than 1,500 km (932 miles) off its coast and into the exclusive economic zones of five ASEAN countries &#8211; Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia &#8211; where Beijing&#8217;s coast guard and armada of fishing vessels have been accused of using intimidation tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcos said he hoped the code of conduct would be in place &#8220;sooner rather than later because the tensions are increasing.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reuters: May 10 &#8211; Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has said the prospect of tensions escalating over Taiwan was a &#8220;grave concern&#8221; to Southeast Asian leaders and discussions about it were inevitable at this week&#8217;s summit in Indonesia. &#8220;Considering that we agree on the concept of ASEAN centrality when it comes to regional concerns, that will be one of the most important subjects that we will bring up,&#8221; Marcos told reporters late on Tuesday.
