The Philippines has become the latest of China\u2019s neighbors to object to its newnational map, joining Malaysia and India in releasing strongly worded statements accusing Beijing of claiming their territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
China published a new version of its national map on Monday, as it has regularly done since at least 2006, to correct what Beijing has in the past referred to as \u201cproblematic maps\u201d that it claims misrepresent its territorial borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Philippines said Thursday it \u201crejected\u201d the map because of its inclusion of a dashed line around contested areas of the South China Sea that was subject to an international tribunal ruling in 2016 that found in favor of Manila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The map is the \u201clatest attempt to legitimize China\u2019s purported sovereignty and jurisdiction over Philippine features and maritime zones (and) has no basis under international law,\u201d the Philippines Foreign Affairs department said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India was the first to complain on Tuesday when it lodged a \u201cstrong protest\u201d about the inclusion of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and the disputed Aksai-Chin plateau in Chinese territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have today lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels with the China side on the so-called 2023 \u2018standard map\u2019 of China that lays claim to India\u2019s territory,\u201d India\u2019s foreign secretary, Arindam Bagchi, said in a statement. \u201cWe reject these claims as they have no basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Malaysia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also dismissed China\u2019s \u201cunilateral claims,\u201d adding the southeast Asian nation \u201cis consistent in its position of rejecting any foreign party\u2019s claims to sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction on Malaysia\u2019s maritime features.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a regular press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin dismissed the complaints, saying the revisions were a \u201croutine exercise of sovereignty in accordance with the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
