The Mexican President travelled to the city by land and at one point had to get out of his car and walk as debris from a mudslide blocked the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The army is bringing machinery and we’re going to try to reopen [the highway] as soon as possible,” President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With landlines and mobile phone coverage disrupted for more than 24 hours, it took officials until Thursday morning to release the death toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Unfortunately, we have received word from the state and city governments that 27 people are dead and four are missing,” Secretary of State for Security Rosa Icela Rodr\u00edguez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She did not give any details about where or how they had died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ministry of defence said 8,000 soldiers had been deployed to Acapulco and towns along the coast to help with the clear-up and provide residents with food and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hurricane Otis made landfall at 00:25 local time (06:25 GMT) on Wednesday.
