{"id":38229,"date":"2024-03-20T04:08:37","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T04:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=38229"},"modified":"2024-03-20T04:08:39","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T04:08:39","slug":"the-worlds-100-worst-polluted-cities-are-in-asia-and-83-of-them-are-in-just-one-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=38229","title":{"rendered":"The world\u2019s 100 worst polluted cities are in Asia \u2014\u00a0and 83 of them are in just one country"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>CNN News:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All but one of the 100 cities with the world\u2019s worst air pollution last year were in Asia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqair.com\/us\/newsroom\/waqr-2023-pr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a new report<\/a>, with the climate crisis playing a pivotal role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/14\/world\/air-pollution-report-2022-climate\/index.html\">bad air quality<\/a> that is risking the health of billions of people worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vast majority of these cities \u2014 83 \u2014 were in India and all exceeded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/22\/world\/air-pollution-climate-change-health\/index.html\">World Health Organization\u2019s air quality guidelines<\/a> by more than&nbsp;10 times, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqair.com\/us\/world-air-quality-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report by IQAir<\/a>, which tracks air quality worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study looked specifically at fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, which is the tiniest pollutant but also the most dangerous. Only 9% of more than 7,800 cities analyzed globally recorded air quality that met WHO\u2019s standard, which says average annual levels of PM2.5 should not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe see that in every part of our lives that air pollution has an impact,\u201d said IQAir Global CEO Frank Hammes. \u201cAnd it typically, in some of the most polluted countries, is likely shaving off anywhere between three to six years of people\u2019s lives. And then before that will lead to many years of suffering that are entirely preventable if there\u2019s better air quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When inhaled, PM2.5 travels deep into lung tissue where it can enter the bloodstream. It comes from sources like the combustion of fossil fuels, dust storms and wildfires, and has been linked to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26100558\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asthma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4740122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heart and lung disease,<\/a> cancer, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6567502\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">respiratory illnesses,<\/a> as well as cognitive impairment in children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Begusarai, a city of half a million people in northern India\u2019s Bihar state, was the world\u2019s most polluted city last year with an average annual PM2.5 concentration of 118.9 \u2014 23 times&nbsp;the WHO guidelines.&nbsp;It was followed in the IQAir rankings by the Indian cities of&nbsp;Guwahati, Assam; Delhi; and Mullanpur, Punjab.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CNN News: All but one of the 100 cities with the world\u2019s worst air pollution last year were in Asia, according to a new report, with the climate crisis playing a pivotal role in bad air quality that is risking the health of billions of people worldwide.
