{"id":38995,"date":"2024-05-02T04:30:54","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T04:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=38995"},"modified":"2024-05-02T04:30:59","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T04:30:59","slug":"us-says-russia-used-choking-agents-against-ukrainian-troops-breaching-chemical-weapons-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=38995","title":{"rendered":"US says Russia used choking agents against Ukrainian troops, breaching chemical weapons ban"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CNN:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States has formally accused Russia of using chemical weapons \u201cas a method of warfare\u201d against Ukraine and imposed sweeping new sanctions on Russian firms and government bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/imposing-new-measures-on-russia-for-its-full-scale-war-and-use-of-chemical-weapons-against-ukraine-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a statement on Wednesday<\/a>, the US State Department said it had \u201cmade a determination \u2026 that Russia has used the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It added that Russia had also used \u201criot control agents,\u201d or tear gas, during the war in violation of the CWC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe use of such chemicals is not an isolated incident, and is probably driven by Russian forces\u2019 desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US conclusion tallies with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/19\/europe\/ukraine-soldiers-russia-frontlines-cmd-intl\/index.html\">testimony from Ukrainian troops<\/a> who say they have faced increased encounters with gas and other irritant chemicals on parts of their frontline with Russia\u2019s forces in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement posted on social media in March, Ukraine\u2019s armed forces said they had recorded more than a thousand incidents where Russia had used \u201ctear gas munitions equipped with toxic chemicals that are prohibited for warfare,\u201d with 250 cases in February alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has previously denied using chemical weapons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CNN: The United States has formally accused Russia of using chemical weapons \u201cas a method of warfare\u201d against Ukraine and imposed sweeping new sanctions on Russian firms and government bodies.
