{"id":39491,"date":"2024-05-23T16:27:05","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T16:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=39491"},"modified":"2024-05-23T16:30:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T16:30:10","slug":"russia-arrests-another-general-on-bribery-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=39491","title":{"rendered":"Russia arrests another general on bribery charges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al Jazeera:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marking the fourth arrest of a high-ranking military official in a month, Russia has detained Lieutenant-General Vadim Shamarin, deputy head of the army\u2019s general staff, on suspicion of large-scale bribe-taking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A military court ordered on Wednesday that Shamarin, who also heads the Ministry of Defence\u2019s main communications directorate, be jailed for two months, according to the state-run TASS news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shamarin\u2019s detention follows the arrests of other top defence officials as part of an effort to stamp out corruption relating to the awarding of lucrative military contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Major-General Ivan Popov, a former top commander in Russia\u2019s offensive in Ukraine, and Lieutenant-General&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/5\/14\/russian-corruption-probe-widens-as-senior-defence-official-arrested\">Yuri Kuznetsov<\/a>, head of the Defence Ministry\u2019s personnel directorate, were arrested on bribery charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, Deputy Defence Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/4\/24\/russia-arrests-deputy-defence-minister-suspected-of-corruption\">Timur Ivanov<\/a>, a close associate of former Defence Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/5\/12\/russias-putin-to-remove-shoigu-as-defence-minister\">Sergei Shoigu<\/a>, was also arrested for alleged bribery. President Vladimir Putin later dismissed Shoigu as defence minister soon after his inauguration in May, replacing him with economist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/5\/13\/the-goal-is-not-peace-whats-behind-putins-wartime-russia-reshuffle\">Andrei Belousov<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoigu had been widely blamed for Russia\u2019s failure to capture Kyiv early in the Ukraine fighting and was accused of incompetence and corruption by Yevgeny Prigozhin, chief of the mercenary Wagner Group, who died in a plane crash last year after launching a \u201cfailed mutiny\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three other people have also been arrested as part of the crackdown \u2013 a friend of Ivanov, a boss at a construction company alleged to have paid bribes, and the former head of several companies subordinate to the Defence Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shamarin is a deputy to General&nbsp;Valery Gerasimov, head of the general staff.
