The village in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/india\">India\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;most populous state is around 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast of the capital, New Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the 116 killed were 108 women and seven&nbsp;children,&nbsp;the state\u2019s Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh told reporters. About 72 people have been identified so far, he added. At least 18 people were injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local officials have suggested that overcrowding was the cause of the crush, which saw people tumble into a sewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singh told reporters that the organizers of Tuesday\u2019s gathering had filed an application that said \u201can estimated 80,000 people\u201d were supposed to attend. However, \u201ca lot more people than expected\u201d showed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deadly scenes happened after the event had finished, when a large number of people went \u201cto touch the feet (of the religious figure) or to collect soil from the venue,\u201d as per local tradition.
