The report supports claims from Ukraine and US media on the withdrawal of the troops, whose arrival raised fears that the war in Ukraine could escalate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea\u2019s National Intelligence Service (NIS) told AFP news agency that the North Korean units have halted combat operations in Russia\u2019s Kursk region \u201csince mid-January\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne reason for this may be the occurrence of many casualties, but the exact details are still being monitored,\u201d said the spy agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Ukrainian military analysis said on Friday that it believed the North Korean soldiers had been pulled back after suffering heavy losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine has previously reported that it had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/1\/15\/moscow-hopes-for-talks-with-trump-that-sideline-ukraine-and-europe\">captured or killed numerous North Korean units<\/a>&nbsp;in Kursk, where it launched a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/1\/5\/ukraine-launches-new-offensive-in-russias-kursk-as-war-casualties-mount\">shock cross-border offensive<\/a>&nbsp;in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published footage of interrogations with what he said were captured North Korean prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In mid-January, the NIS estimated that about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/1\/13\/seoul-says-300-north-korean-soldiers-killed-2700-wounded-fighting-ukraine\">300 North Korean soldiers had been killed<\/a>&nbsp;and a further 2,700 soldiers injured in fighting around the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The North Korean deployment to Kursk, which neither Pyongyang nor Moscow have officially acknowledged, was supposed to reinforce Russia\u2019s army and help expel Ukraine\u2019s troops.
