United States President Donald Trump has welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House, marking the first visit of a foreign leader during his second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Tuesday\u2019s meeting was steeped in controversy as Trump repeatedly weighed in on the future of war-torn Gaza \u2014 and whether Palestinians should return to live in the enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGaza is a guarantee that they\u2019re going to end up dying. The same thing is going to happen again,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIt\u2019s happened over and over again. And it\u2019s going to happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo I hope we can do something where they wouldn\u2019t want to go back. \u200aWho would want to go back? They\u2019ve experienced nothing but death and destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump also suggested that the US aims to \u201ctake over\u201d a depopulated Gaza, shaping its landscape for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u200aI do see a long-term ownership position, and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East and maybe the entire Middle East,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis was not a decision made lightly. Everybody I\u2019ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing and creating thousands of jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A fragile ceasefire recently paused hostilities in Gaza where, for the past 15 months, Israel has led a devastating military campaign that has killed an estimated 61,700 Palestinians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
United Nations experts and human rights advocates have compared the military campaign with a genocide. But the US remains a firm ally of Israel \u2013 and of Netanyahu\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In remarks after his bilateral meeting with Netanyahu, Trump returned to a vision he had outlined earlier in the day, in which Palestinians would be settled \u201cpermanently\u201d in \u201ca beautiful area\u201d outside of Gaza.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
