{"id":47490,"date":"2025-06-02T04:30:27","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T04:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=47490"},"modified":"2025-06-02T04:35:53","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T04:35:53","slug":"bangladesh-supreme-court-lifts-ban-on-jamaat-e-islami-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=47490","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh Supreme Court lifts ban on Jamaat-e-Islami party"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al Jazeera:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bangladesh has restored the registration of the country\u2019s largest Muslim party, more than a decade after it was banned by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunday\u2019s Supreme Court decision means the Jamaat-e-Islami party can now be formally listed with the Election Commission, paving the way for its participation in the next general election, which the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/8\/28\/bangladeshs-interim-government-lifts-ban-on-jamaat-e-islami-party\">interim government<\/a>&nbsp;has promised to hold by June next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jamaat-e-Islami lawyer Shishir Monir said the ruling would allow a \u201cdemocratic, inclusive and multiparty system\u201d in the Muslim-majority country of 170 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope that Bangladeshis, regardless of their ethnicity or religious identity, will vote for Jamaat and that the parliament will be vibrant with constructive debates,\u201d Monir told journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The party had appealed for a review of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2013\/8\/1\/bangladesh-court-declares-jamaat-illegal\">2013 high court order<\/a>&nbsp;cancelling its registration after Hasina\u2019s government was ousted in August by a student-led nationwide uprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasina, 77, fled to India and is now being tried in absentia over her crackdown last year, described by prosecutors as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/1\/bangladesh-ex-pm-hasina-charged-with-systematic-attack-as-trial-opens\">systematic attack<\/a>\u201d on protesters, which according to the United Nations, killed up to 1,400 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Al Jazeera: Bangladesh has restored the registration of the country\u2019s largest Muslim party, more than a decade after it was banned by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina\u2019s government.
