{"id":47774,"date":"2025-06-13T12:45:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T12:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=47774"},"modified":"2025-06-13T12:45:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T12:45:44","slug":"bangladesh-interim-government-head-signals-possible-early-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=47774","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh interim government head signals possible early election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Reuters)    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DHAKA, June 13 &#8211; Bangladesh\u2019s interim leader signalled on Friday the possibility of holding a national election in February next year, two months earlier than previously announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel peace laureate who has led an interim government since August, was responding to a suggestion from Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who urged the vote be held before Ramadan, which begins in mid-February 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yunus responded positively, saying an election could be held in the week before Ramadan if sufficient progress was made on political and judicial reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments came in a joint statement released after the two men met in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yunus, currently on a visit to Britain, last week said the election would be held by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/bangladeshs-elections-be-held-first-half-april-2026-says-de-facto-pm-yunus-2025-06-06\/\">first half of April 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, pressure has been mounting from opposition groups for an earlier vote, with the BNP warning of public unrest if elections were delayed beyond December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yunus\u2019 administration, which came to power after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/around-1500-killed-bangladesh-protests-that-ousted-pm-hasina-2024-11-17\/\">deadly student-led<\/a>&nbsp;protests forced then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India, has recently faced growing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/protests-grip-bangladesh-pressure-mounts-yunus-led-government-2025-05-26\/\">discontent<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BNP chief Khaleda Zia was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/bangladeshs-top-court-acquits-former-pm-khaleda-graft-case-2025-01-15\/\">acquitted<\/a>&nbsp;in January in a long-running corruption case,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/bangladeshs-ailing-former-premier-khaleda-zia-returns-home-2025-05-06\/\">clearing<\/a>&nbsp;her path to contest the upcoming election.
