North Korean leader Kim Jong Un restated he \u201cunconditionally\u201d supports all Russian actions during its war in Ukraine, as he welcomed Moscow\u2019s top diplomat to a newly built beach resort<\/a> on his country\u2019s east coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim met Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the North Korean city of Wonsan, at a time when Pyongyang is being pulled deeper into the three-year conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, Kim reaffirmed his government\u2019s commitment to \u201cunconditionally support and encourage all measures\u201d that Russia takes in Ukraine, the Associated Press reported, citing the official Korean Central News Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photos released by Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry showed the two men smiling and shaking hands, and sitting across from each other at a small circular table in the cabin of a yacht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov\u2019s trip comes at a crucial time for Russian-North Korean relations, with Pyongyang set to deploy an additional 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers<\/a> to assist Moscow\u2019s scaled-up assault on Ukraine, according to Ukrainian intelligence \u2013 adding to the estimated 11,000 soldiers Pyongyang sent last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also comes as the United States has grown increasingly frustrated with Russia. US President Donald Trump has accused his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of throwing \u201cbullsh*t\u201d at peace talks, and pledged more support for Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trip could further strengthen an alliance that has the potential to reshape not only the war but the security dynamic in Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry posted on X that Putin sent \u201chis warm greetings\u201d to Kim, \u201cand reaffirms commitment to all the previous agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov, who arrived in North Korea on Friday for a three-day visit, also met with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui in Wonsan Saturday, Russia\u2019s foreign ministry said<\/a> on Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe exchanged views on the situation surrounding the Ukrainian crisis,\u201d Lavrov was quoted<\/a> as saying by Russian state media agency TASS at a press conference following that meeting. \u201cOur Korean friends confirmed their firm support for all the objectives of the special military operation, as well as for the actions of the Russian leadership and armed forces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As to what Pyongyang gets in return for such support, Robert Kelly, professor of political science at Pusan National University in South Korea, said \u201cthe real concern\u2026 is what are the North Koreans getting on the weapons of mass destruction program?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite years of diplomacy and sanctions intended to stop its nuclear program, the Kim regime is thought to possess multiple nuclear weapons, as well as missiles that can potentially reach the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre the Russians giving the North Koreans guidance technology, are they giving it warhead reentry technology, perhaps they are giving it drone technology,\u201d Kelly told CNN\u2019s Brian Abel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow is also likely paying the impoverished nation \u201cat minimum a per head, a per capita, price for each North Korean soldier that\u2019s been deployed,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sending soldiers \u201cabout whom the North Korean regime doesn\u2019t care at all,\u201d in exchange for extremely \u201cvaluable technological stuff from the Russians,\u201d is a \u201creally, really good boost for the North Koreans because they\u2019re getting something that they can\u2019t make locally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
