This year\u2019s festival, held from November 12\u201314, 2025, showcased some of the most visionary and forward-thinking work in contemporary global design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 780 submissions were received, with over 460 shortlisted and reviewed by an international jury of 164 experts from 37 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Future Project of the Year\u2014WAF\u2019s highest honor for unbuilt projects\u2014celebrates architectural concepts that demonstrate outstanding innovation, cultural integrity, and transformative impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gelephu International Airport first won the Infrastructure \u2013 Future Projects category before being selected as the overall Future Project of the Year, underscoring its global significance and design excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Celebrating Bhutanese Craft, Identity, and Vision:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed as more than an infrastructure facility, Gelephu International Airport is envisioned as a cultural and ecological gateway that reflects Bhutan\u2019s identity and values. Its architecture intricately weaves traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship\u2014especially woodcarving\u2014into advanced structural engineering, creating a form that is both functional and deeply expressive of place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WAF jury praised the project\u2019s originality, noting that \u201cit is unusual to see a project that integrates craft so actively into a gateway structure.\u201d They highlighted its compelling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>synthesis of innovation, authenticity, and cultural continuity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the principal arrival point to Gelephu Mindfulness City, the airport will introduce visitors to a city whose development philosophy is rooted in balance, wellbeing, and reverence for Bhutan\u2019s heritage.
