{"id":54315,"date":"2026-01-12T15:52:41","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T15:52:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=54315"},"modified":"2026-01-12T16:07:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T16:07:11","slug":"thailands-liberal-opposition-tops-polls-as-election-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=54315","title":{"rendered":"Thailand&#8217;s liberal opposition tops polls as election looms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> (Reuters)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BANGKOK, Jan 12 &#8211; Thailand&#8217;s progressive opposition\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/thailands-disbanded-opposition-regroups-under-new-anti-establishment-party-2024-08-09\/\">People&#8217;s Party<\/a>\u00a0and its leader are most favoured among voters for next month&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/thailands-snap-election-how-will-it-play-out-2025-12-12\/\">general election<\/a>, two surveys showed, underlining the stiff challenge facing Prime Minister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/how-thailands-anutin-charnvirakul-rose-cannabis-crusader-prime-minister-2025-09-05\/\">Anutin Charnvirakul<\/a>&#8216;s bid to stay in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thailand&#8217;s February 8 election could usher in a new round of turmoil in Thailand, and will be a showdown between the anti-establishment People&#8217;s Party, Anutin&#8217;s conservative Bhumjaithai and the former ruling party&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/with-thaksin-jailed-thailands-pheu-thai-turns-nephew-poll-fight-back-2025-12-17\/\">Pheu Thai<\/a>, with bitter histories of betrayal that could complicate efforts to form a government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The People&#8217;s Party was backed by 34.2% of respondents in a January 6-9 poll by Suan Dusit released on Sunday, with Bhumjaithai second on 16.2% and the once-dominant Pheu Thai on 16.0%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People&#8217;s Party head and opposition leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut was the top choice for prime minister among 32% of the 2,682 people surveyed, followed by Pheu Thai&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/with-thaksin-jailed-thailands-pheu-thai-turns-nephew-poll-fight-back-2025-12-17\/\">Yodchanan Wongsawat<\/a>&nbsp;on 17.4% and Anutin third on 15.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With huge support among young and urban Thais for its bold reform agenda, the People&#8217;s Party&#8217;s predecessor Move Forward&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/old-rivalries-new-battle-thailand-goes-polls-2023-05-13\/\">won the most votes<\/a>&nbsp;in the 2023 election but was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/last-chance-thailands-pita-become-pm-parliament-votes-2023-07-19\/\">blocked<\/a>&nbsp;from power by lawmakers allied with the royalist military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move Forward was later dissolved by a court, one of a series of dramatic twists in an unrelenting cycle of upheaval that has seen three Thai premiers in less than three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anutin called a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/thai-pm-sets-course-early-election-amid-border-parliamentary-unrest-2025-12-12\/\">snap election<\/a>&nbsp;on December 12 after less than 100 days in office during a turbulent parliamentary session that could have led to a no-confidence vote and the collapse of his fragile minority government.
