PARIS, March 20 – The French Navy seized an \u200boil tanker on Friday in the Western Mediterranean that \u200cPresident Emmanuel Macron said belonged to Russia’s shadow fleet, a network of vessels that enables Moscow to export oil despite Western sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local officials told \u200bReuters earlier on Friday that the navy had boarded \u200ba Mozambique-flagged vessel named Deyna that was suspected of \u2060flying a false flag. The ship had been sailing \u200bfrom the Russian port of Murmansk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operation was carried out with \u200bBritish allies, the French Mediterranean prefecture said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia, which has had increasing international sanctions imposed on it over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, did not immediately \u200bcomment on the tanker’s seizure. It has previously called the \u200bseizure of its tankers or vessels carrying its cargoes an act of piracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At \u200cthe \u2060prosecutor’s request, the vessel was escorted to an anchorage point for further inspection, the French military said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These ships, which circumvent international sanctions and violate the law of the sea, are war \u200bprofiteers,” Macron wrote \u200bin a \u2060post on X. “They seek to reap profits and finance Russia’s war effort.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the second such \u200binterception by France in recent months. In January, \u200bFrance stopped \u2060the oil tanker Grinch<\/a> between the southern coast of Spain and the northern coast of Morocco on suspicion that it was part \u2060of \u200bthe Russian shadow fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
