{"id":55807,"date":"2026-03-25T10:41:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T10:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=55807"},"modified":"2026-03-25T10:41:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T10:41:52","slug":"asia-looks-to-covid-era-playbook-to-tackle-fuel-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=55807","title":{"rendered":"Asia looks to COVID-era playbook to tackle fuel crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> (Reuters)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">March 25 &#8211; Countries across Asia are weighing up work-from-home policies and stimulus measures enforced during the COVID pandemic, as they scramble to respond to global fuel shortages triggered by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/iran\/\">Iran war<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asia is at the frontline of the fuel crisis, \u200bbuying more than 80% of the crude that transits the Strait of Hormuz, which has been almost totally blocked by Iran since the war broke out on \u200cFebruary 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No country in the region has enforced work-from-home measures yet, but some have said they are on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think it is a good idea,&#8221; South Korean Energy Minister Kim Sung-whan said on Tuesday when asked about an International Energy Agency recommendation for people to work from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IEA, which agreed a record release of around 400 million barrels of oil from strategic stockpiles to deal with the crisis, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/work-home-avoid-air-travel-deal-with-higher-energy-prices-iea-says-2026-03-20\/\">outlined proposals<\/a>&nbsp;to ease oil \u200bprice pressures such as working from home and avoiding air travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol repeated those calls at a conference in Sydney this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There were real-life tests, such \u200bas after the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ukraine-russia-war\/\">Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, European countries adopted these measures, and it was announced by the European governments. It helped them a lot to \u2060go through these difficult times without Russian energy &#8230; but keeping the lights on,&#8221; Birol said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industrial powerhouse South Korea on Tuesday launched a public campaign asking people to cut shower time, charge \u200bphones during the day and run vacuums on weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We will consult with relevant ministries and actively consider measures for work-from-home,\u201d Energy Minister Kim told a briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Philippines, which relies heavily on Middle Eastern \u200boil for its energy needs, shortened the work week in some government offices earlier this month.
