March 28 – Twenty-two migrants have died off the \u200ccoast of Greece after spending six days at sea in a rubber boat, the Greek coast guard said in \u200ba statement late on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twenty-six people were \u200brescued by a Frontex European border agency vessel \u2060off the island of Crete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“During the journey, the \u200bpassengers (of the rubber boat) lost their orientation and remained \u200bat sea for six days without water and food,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rescued migrants told authorities that 22 of them died \u200bwhile at sea and the bodies were thrown \u200boverboard on the orders of one of the traffickers, the \u200cstatement \u2060said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Greece has long been a favoured gateway to Europe for migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2015-16, it was at \u200bthe frontline of \u200bEurope’s migration \u2060crisis and nearly 1 million people landed on its islands, mainly from \u200bTurkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many are still attempting to cross the \u200bMediterranean \u2060sea in boats and accidents are not rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
