{"id":56699,"date":"2026-04-17T08:54:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T08:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=56699"},"modified":"2026-04-17T08:54:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T08:54:24","slug":"myanmar-cuts-ex-leader-aung-san-suu-kyis-sentence-frees-former-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=56699","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar cuts ex-leader Aung San Suu Kyi&#8217;s sentence, frees former president"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(Reuters)\u0f0b\u0f0b\u0f0b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>April 17  &#8211; Myanmar has reduced the sentence of imprisoned ex-leader Aung San Suu Kyi, her lawyer told Reuters on Friday, as part \u200bof an amnesty by a new president who ousted her government \u200cin a coup five years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suu Kyi, 80, was serving a 27-year sentence for a litany of offences her allies said were politically motivated to keep her at bay, ranging from \u200bincitement and corruption to election fraud and violating a state secrets \u200blaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence has been cut by one-sixth, but it remains unclear \u2060whether the Nobel Peace Prize winner will be allowed to serve the rest \u200bof her sentence under house arrest, the lawyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wildly popular Suu Kyi, who \u200bhad dismissed the charges against her as &#8220;absurd&#8221;, has not been seen in public since the end of her marathon trials, and her whereabouts have been unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, state media reported that President \u200bMin Aung Hlaing approved an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/myanmar-free-more-than-4000-prisoners-amnesty-2026-04-17\/\">amnesty<\/a>&nbsp;for 4,335 prisoners, the third such move in \u200bthe past six months. Amnesties typically take place in Myanmar each year to mark Independence \u200cDay in \u2060January and New Year in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the prisoners freed was Win Myint, who served as president from 2018 until the 2021 military coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Win Myint, an ally of Suu Kyi, was &#8220;granted a pardon and the reduction of his remaining sentences \u200bunder specified conditions&#8221;, state \u200bbroadcaster MRTV said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2060A spokesperson for the military-backed government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2021 coup against Win Myint and Suu \u200bKyi&#8217;s democratically elected government was led by Min Aung Hlaing. It \u200bplunged the Southeast \u2060Asian country into a nationwide civil war that continues to rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Min Aung Hlaing was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/myanmars-junta-chief-set-parliamentary-vote-presidential-bid-2026-04-03\/\">elected president<\/a>&nbsp;on April 3 following polls in December and January during which the opposition was stifled and \u2060largely \u200babsent.
