{"id":56966,"date":"2026-04-23T11:50:50","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T11:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=56966"},"modified":"2026-04-23T11:51:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T11:51:03","slug":"iran-war-pushing-more-than-30-million-back-into-poverty-un-development-chief-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=56966","title":{"rendered":"Iran war pushing more than 30 million back into poverty, UN development chief says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(Reuters)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BANGKOK, April 23  &#8211; More than 30 million people will be pushed back into poverty by the impacts of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/iran\/\">the Iran war<\/a>\u00a0including disruptions to \u200bfuel and fertiliser supplies just as farmers are planting crops, U.N. \u200cdevelopment chief Alexander De Croo said on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/fertiliser-shortages-due-iran-war-are-key-worry-developing-world-un-agency-says-2026-04-14\/\">Fertiliser shortages<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; worsened by the blocking of cargo vessels through the Strait of Hormuz &#8211; have already lowered agricultural productivity, the Administrator of \u200bthe United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) told Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would likely hit crop \u200byields later this year, the former Belgian prime minister added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Food insecurity \u2060will be at its peak level in a few months &#8211; and there \u200bis not much that you can do about it,&#8221; he said, also listing \u200bother fallouts of the crisis including energy shortages and falling remittances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Even if the war would stop tomorrow, those effects, you already have them, and they will be pushing back more \u200bthan 30 million people into poverty,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the world&#8217;s fertilizer \u200bis produced in the Middle East, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/how-does-iran-war-affect-fertiliser-supplies-prices-food-security-2026-03-17\/\">one-third<\/a>&nbsp;of global supplies passes through the Strait of \u200cHormuz, where \u2060Iran and the United States are jostling for control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the U.N.
