BAUCHI, Nigeria, May 12 – At least 100 civilians were killed in a Nigerian military airstrike on a crowded market in northwest \u200bZamfara state, Amnesty International said on Tuesday, urging authorities to \u200copen an immediate investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airstrike, which hit the remote Tumfa market in Zurmi district on Sunday, was the second to kill scores of people at a \u200bcrowded market in northern Nigeria in a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of injured \u200bpeople were being treated at hospitals in Zurmi and nearby \u2060Shinkafi, Amnesty said, adding that many of those killed were \u200bwomen and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nigerian military did not immediately respond to requests for \u200bcomment but has previously denied targeting civilians, saying airstrikes are intelligence-led and hit only militant targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing witnesses, Amnesty said military jets had been spotted hovering around the \u200barea at midday and returned about two hours later and struck \u200bthe crowded market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, around 200 civilians<\/a> were killed in a similar airstrike on \u200ca \u2060weekly market in Jilli, in northeastern Nigeria. The military has opened a probe into that incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents say they are increasingly worried about civilian deaths from military raids and strikes<\/a> in northern regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria’s military has been battling \u200bbanditry in the \u200bnorthwest and a \u206017-year Islamist insurgency in the northeast. The United States struck what it said were Islamist bases in \u200bnorthwestern Nigeria on Christmas Day last year, after President \u200bDonald \u2060Trump accused Nigeria of failing to protect Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This pattern of human rights violation is increasingly becoming the norm, with villagers at the receiving end \u2060of \u200batrocities by both armed groups, bandits and \u200bthe military,” Amnesty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
