{"id":57527,"date":"2026-05-12T09:50:50","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T09:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=57527"},"modified":"2026-05-12T09:51:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T09:51:00","slug":"global-fire-outbreaks-hit-record-high-as-unprecedented-heat-extremes-loom-scientists-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=57527","title":{"rendered":"Global fire outbreaks hit record high as &#8216;unprecedented&#8217; heat extremes loom, scientists say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(Reuters)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SINGAPORE, May 12  &#8211; Climate change has driven record-breaking outbreaks \u200bof fire in Africa, Asia and elsewhere this year, with conditions expected to get worse as \u200cthe northern hemisphere&#8217;s summer approaches and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/how-el-nino-could-impact-worlds-weather-202627-2026-04-24\/\">El Nino<\/a>\u00a0weather patterns kick in, scientists warned on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fires from January to April have already caused&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/el-nino-set-return-early-may-impacting-global-weather-patterns-un-weather-agency-2026-04-24\/\">unprecedented levels of damage<\/a>, burning more than 150 million hectares (370.66 million acres) of land, 20% more than the previous record, according to data compiled by \u200bWorld Weather Attribution, a research group that studies the role played by global warming in extreme weather \u200bevents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers said temperature records could be broken this year, causing widespread drought as well as \u2060fires, with the impact of human-induced climate change compounded by an especially strong &#8220;El Nino&#8221; effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Whilst in many parts \u200bof the world the global fire season has yet to heat up, this rapid start, in combination with the forecast \u200bEl Nino, means that we&#8217;re looking at a particularly severe year materialising,&#8221; said Theodore Keeping, a wildfire expert at Imperial College London and part of the WWA group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As much as 85 million hectares of land have burned in Africa so far this year, 23% more than the \u200bprevious record of 69 million hectares, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unusually high fire activity in Africa is being driven by rapid \u200bshifts from extremely wet to extremely dry conditions, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High rainfall produced more grass during the previous growing season, creating an abundance \u200cof \u2060fuel to feed the drought- and heat-induced savannah fires of the last few months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Reuters) SINGAPORE, May 12 &#8211; Climate change has driven record-breaking outbreaks \u200bof fire in Africa, Asia and elsewhere this year, with conditions expected to get worse as \u200cthe northern hemisphere&#8217;s summer approaches and\u00a0El Nino\u00a0weather patterns kick in, scientists warned on Tuesday.
