An Israeli air strike on a town in southern Lebanon has killed six people, including three paramedics, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. It comes as the US said the two countries had agreed to a 45-day ceasefire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The health ministry said a fourth paramedic had sustained “critical injuries” after a civil defence centre was attacked in the town of Harouf. The BBC has contacted the Israeli military for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Friday, the US state department announced Israel and Lebanon had agreed to extend their shaky ceasefire after two days of negotiations in Washington DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
US President Donald Trump announced the truce on 16 April, but Israel and Hezbollah have continued to exchange fire since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday, Lebanon’s health ministry said Israeli air strikes had killed 22 people, including eight children, across the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border,” said state department spokesman Tommy Pigott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The state department said it would “reconvene the political track of negotiations” in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“In addition, a security track will be launched at the Pentagon on May 29 with military delegations from both countries,” Pigott added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Israel’s Ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, said the talks were “frank and constructive”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said that he hoped to “mobilise all Arab and international support to bolster our position in the negotiations” with Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There have been almost daily reports of Hezbollah and Israel trading fire across the southern border of Lebanon since the ceasefire began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Israel has intensified its air and artillery strikes in recent days, particularly in southern Lebanon, saying it was targeting Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lebanon’s health ministry has accused Israel of targeting civilians and paramedics, which Israel denies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Israeli military says it is aiming to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon to thwart future Hezbollah attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In those areas, entire villages have been destroyed in similar tactics deployed by the Israeli military in Gaza. Human rights groups say some cases could amount to war crimes, which Israel denies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
