{"id":58779,"date":"2026-06-19T12:37:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T12:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=58779"},"modified":"2026-06-19T12:37:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T12:37:17","slug":"sri-lanka-battles-surge-in-dengue-fever-with-more-than-44000-cases-so-far-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=58779","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka battles surge in dengue fever, with more than 44,000 cases so far this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Reuters)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COLOMBO, June 19  &#8211; Sri Lanka is battling the worst outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever in years, with more than 44,000 cases and 28 \u200bdeaths recorded since January, an official said on Friday, putting \u200cpublic hospitals under strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dengue is common during Sri Lanka&#8217;s monsoon season, but unplanned urbanisation coupled with damage caused by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/cyclone-ditwah-delay-sri-lankas-fragile-recovery-worsen-poverty-2025-12-09\/\">Cyclone Ditwah<\/a>, which hit the island nation in late November, \u200bhas worsened the outbreak this year, authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of dengue \u200bcases nearly doubled from 5,651 in April to 10,638 in \u2060the first two weeks of June, data from the National Dengue Control \u200bUnit (NDCU) showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We noticed this increase after the cyclone,&#8221; Dr. Prashila Samaraweera, consultant community \u200bphysician and NDCU spokesperson, told Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A lot of debris was in our environment, so we noticed a lot of mosquito breeding places, and our entomological indices were high \u200bfrom that time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With 51,000 cases recorded in the whole of last year, \u200bthe rate of infections has risen sharply, Dr. Samaraweera said.
