Venezuela<\/a>‘s twin earthquakes has risen to \u200b3,811, according to figures released by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez on \u200cWednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe latest tally puts the number of injured in the June 24 quakes at 16,740, and the number of homeless at 17,907.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interim President Delcy Rodriguez renewed calls \u200bfor international sanctions on Venezuela to be lifted to assist the \u200bearthquake recovery, saying the country had enough overseas assets to \u2060help finance reconstruction if blocked accounts were released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Venezuela has resources blocked \u200baround the world that could address this process of reconstruction,” the president \u200bsaid on state television channel VTV, adding that funds were also needed for employment and education programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S., the European Union and other countries imposed successively more \u200bstringent sanctions on Venezuela in the last two decades over allegations that \u200bthe government engaged in anti-democratic activity and that the country is a haven for drug \u200ctrafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many \u2060of the measures remain in place. But after the U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro early this year, Washington provided targeted relief to the country’s oil sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the earthquakes, the U.S. authorized for four months \u200btransactions related to earthquake \u200brelief that \u2060would have been banned by sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delcy Rodriguez said she had sent a letter to King Charles requesting the \u200brelease of Venezuelan gold held at the Bank of \u200bEngland. She \u2060also said she had spoken with the head of the International Monetary Fund about releasing funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
