{"id":60002,"date":"2026-07-31T04:01:35","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T04:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=60002"},"modified":"2026-07-31T04:01:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T04:01:42","slug":"india-to-increase-penalties-for-exam-leaks-after-cockroach-party-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=60002","title":{"rendered":"India to increase penalties for exam leaks after Cockroach party protests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BBC:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India\u2019s upper house of parliament has passed a bill to increase penalties for leaking examination papers, after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/29\/how-has-the-indian-government-responded-to-cockroach-protests\">youth-led protests<\/a>\u00a0called for sweeping reforms and forced the country\u2019s education minister to resign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation passed on Thursday would double the maximum prison sentence for those involved in paper leaks to 10 years and raise the maximum fine to more than $1m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It cleared the lower house a day earlier and was approved by voice vote in the upper chamber after hours of debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an issue in which every parent, every family, and indeed every citizen of this country has a stake, because these young children are our greatest investment,\u201d Jitendra Singh, a junior minister who has negotiated with the protesters, told the Rajya Sabha, India\u2019s upper house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill must now be signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s cabinet green-lighted the stricter punishments last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parliamentary approvals come after weeks of mass protests over leaked exam papers and other irregularities, which culminated in the resignation of Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protests, spearheaded by the online&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/26\/what-next-for-indias-cockroach-movement-after-education-minister-sacked\">Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)<\/a>&nbsp;movement, drew massive support from students across the country and presented a major challenge to Modi\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exam paper leaks have remained a recurring problem in both national and state-level examinations in India, despite repeated government crackdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indian media reported on Tuesday that the country\u2019s federal investigative agency charged 13 people with a range of crimes relating to the leak of a national medical college entrance test earlier this year.
