KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan, Aug 8 – Taiwan President Lai Ching-te oversaw coastal strike drills on Saturday during annual war games, boarding a fast attack \u200bmissile boat and watching the deployment of low-flying attack drones to \u200csimulate beating off a Chinese assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taiwan kicked off the Han Kuang exercises on Wednesday. Lasting 10 days, the drills focus on Taiwan’s combat readiness against a potential invasion by China, which \u200bregards the democratically governed island as its own territory and has vowed \u200bto bring it under its control, by force if necessary. Lai boarded a fast attack missile boat at a \u200bnavy base in the southern city of Kaohsiung, from where he broadcast a message \u200bto the sailors taking part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The purpose of the Han Kuang exercise is to use live troops, live terrain and live equipment to test command coordination, combat responsiveness and homeland defence capabilities,” \u200bhe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the face of “external threats and challenges”, the government will continue to \u200bwork to strengthen defence capabilities, giving the military and Coast Guard the greatest support, Lai said, \u200cwithout \u2060directly mentioning China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
