It also claimed additional strikes on two US vessels and eight tankers in the region, saying the assaults caused \u201cgreat damage\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exchange of fire comes amid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/9\/5\/us-says-it-hit-iran-oil-tankers-helping-finance-regional-proxies\">escalating tensions<\/a>&nbsp;in the Gulf six months into the US and Israel\u2019s war on Iran, with Tehran maintaining the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Washington enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hostilities drove oil prices to $99.49 a barrel in early trading on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had sought to target a US warship twice over the past two days, but the vessel \u201csuccessfully evaded the attempted Iranian attacks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo American personnel were harmed,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CENTCOM said it responded by striking and destroying the Iranian oil carriers, M\/T Kaviz, M\/T Charminar, M\/T Horizon 1, and M\/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, as well as M\/T Derya near Kharg Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAmerican forces directed the crews to abandon ship before the vessels were struck and rendered inoperable,\u201d CENTCOM added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Al Jazeera: The United States has attacked\u00a0five Iranian oil tankers\u00a0in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island after accusing Tehran of launching ballistic missiles at a US warship twice in two days.
