MANILA, Sept 10 – Five \u200cpeople died and more than 80 are missing after a ferry caught fire off Palawan \u200bisland in the western Philippines \u200bon Wednesday night, the Philippine Coast Guard said \u2060on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Forty-three people were rescued on \u200bWednesday night after the fire broke out \u200baboard the MV June Aster in waters off Coron, Palawan, the PCG said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Footage released by the \u200bCoast Guard showed flames engulfing parts \u200bof the vessel and responders placing bodies in \u200cbody \u2060bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab told DZXL radio that the vessel’s manifest listed 117 passengers and 17 crew members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Based \u200bon the \u200breported number \u2060of survivors and fatalities, more than 80 people were unaccounted \u200bfor, and Cayabyab said the \u200bfigures \u2060may change as the rescue operation continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ferry had departed from Baseco in Manila \u2060and \u200bwas bound for Coron, \u200bshe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
