{"id":61185,"date":"2026-09-11T11:07:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T11:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=61185"},"modified":"2026-09-11T11:07:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T11:07:19","slug":"government-not-helping-nepal-manhunt-mp-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gyalchisarshog.com\/?p=61185","title":{"rendered":"Government not helping Nepal manhunt, MP says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BBC:   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An MP has accused the government of failing to help one of his constituents who has been missing since a deadly flood struck Nepal last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashington and Blyth MP Ian Lavery told parliament the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has refused to directly assist in the hunt for Newbiggin-by-the-Sea resident Anirban Battacharyya who, despite living in the UK for 60 years, maintains Indian citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lavery asked for urgent talks on how the government &#8220;can be more helpful to people who have lived in this country all their lives&#8221; but don&#8217;t have citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government said it was &#8220;in contact&#8221; with Indian authorities regarding &#8220;relief efforts&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2kw1qek7gdo\">1,000 people are known to have died<\/a>, and thousands remain missing, after a flash flood believed to have been triggered by a glacial collapse swept through Nepalese border villages on 26 August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Battacharyya was travelling between Kolkata in India and Nepal&#8217;s capital Kathmandu when he was lost in the flooding and has not been heard from since, according to the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ldrs.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Local Democracy Reporting Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, Lavery said: &#8220;The FCO have been less than helpful, pointing the family to the Indian Consulate who again have been less than helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Because he hasn&#8217;t got a British passport, we can&#8217;t help him?&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BBC: An MP has accused the government of failing to help one of his constituents who has been missing since a deadly flood struck Nepal last month.
