The student can also bring dependent children under the age of 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government&#8217;s move comes after the hard-right One Nation party, which has been \u200bsurging in recent polls, said this week that it would slash the \u200bnumber of temporary migrants by 750,000 over three years, to give Australians &#8220;breathing space.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Nation, which describes \u200cits \u2060approach as &#8220;Australia first&#8221; and whose policies have drawn comparisons to those of U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>, said it would aim to restrict net overseas migration to 130,000 after the initial three years, with the program expected to be reviewed annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia&#8217;s migration \u200bintake, driven largely \u200bby international students, \u2060backpackers and temporary skilled workers, surged after the country reopened its borders in February 2022 following nearly two years of \u200bCOVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, numbers have been trending lower over the past \u200btwo years, \u2060even as critics argue the influx of migrants has increased pressure on housing and infrastructure and strained social cohesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Net overseas migration totalled 306,000 in the year ended \u2060June \u200b30, 2025, with international students accounting for more \u200bthan half of that total, according to official data.
