Xi would be a ‘sinner’ of all Chinese if attacks island, says Taiwan official

India Today:

After Chinese President Xi Jinping asserted at the 20th Communist Party Congress to forcefully reclaim Taiwan if required, Taiwan’s top security official retorted that the Chinese president would be a sinner of all Chinese people if he attacked Taiwan.

“Xi would forfeit the so-called great rejuvenation of the Chinese people and become a sinner of the Chinese people,” Reuters quoted the head of Taiwan’s National Security Bureau, Chen Ming-tong as saying.

Xi Jinping, who is likely to be elected president for the third five-year term, has been determined about the reunification of Taiwan with China.

China has continuously been mounting pressure on Taiwan by ramping up its military might.

The democratically elected Taiwan government claims it is up to the Taiwanese people to decide their future, as Taiwan was never a part of Communist China.

“It’s very clear that the two sides should respect each other and develop separately, which is the way that will bring happiness to the people,” Chen said.

The Taiwan strait was on the boil in August after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had landed in Taiwan as she was the first senior US official in 25 years to visit the island.
