In a continuous battle against drug trade, consumption, and cross-border smuggling, authorities have made headway in curbing illegal activities at the Indo-Bhutan border town of Jaigaon-Phuentsholing. Despite the persistent efforts of the West Bengal Police and the Royal Bhutan Police, these illicit operations have proven to be a persistent challenge. However, recent actions by law enforcement agencies have shown promising results in restricting the inflow of drugs and curbing cross-border smuggling to some extent.
Over the years, the Indo-Bhutan border region has become notorious for drug-related activities, with smuggling networks using intricate routes to avoid detection. The WBP and RBP have been working collaboratively to combat this issue, but the magnitude of the problem has made it difficult to completely eradicate these illegal activities.
In a significant development on the evening of August 28, 2023, the Jaigaon Police, operating under the Alipurduar District Police, successfully apprehended two individuals, Dharam Prakash Gupta (31) and Karma Tenzing (47). Dharam Prakash Gupta is the son of Ram Narayan Gupta and hails from Deokata Toll, Jaigaon, while Karma Tenzing is the son of Passang Dukpa and is from Paro, Bhutan. The apprehension took place near the Helipad Ground, Bhulan Turning.
The authorities were able to seize a Bhutanese Taxi with license plate number BT 1A 5474 that was in the possession of the two suspects. Upon further investigation, the police discovered a stash of 50 bottles of Onereex Cough Syrup. This seizure is believed to be linked to the illegal drug trade that has plagued the region.
Local law enforcement agencies are taking swift action in response to this significant seizure. A specific case is set to be initiated according to the provisions of the law. The apprehension of these two individuals and the subsequent seizure of illicit substances mark a noteworthy step forward in the fight against drug-related crimes in the border region.
Authorities have expressed their commitment to intensify their efforts in preventing the trade and consumption of drugs in the area. While challenges remain, this recent success serves as a reminder that concerted efforts and vigilant enforcement can yield positive outcomes in the ongoing battle against illicit activities.
As the WBP and RBP continue to collaborate and adapt their strategies, there is hope that the Indo-Bhutan border town of Jaigaon-Phuentsholing can overcome its reputation as a hotspot for drug-related activities, paving the way for a safer and more secure border region.
